I prefer this method of selecting photos first rather than starting with an empty album. Type a name for the album then tap the checkmark. Add more photos to the album by tapping the Add Photos icon (a square icon of a painting with a + symbol). So search for the folder name and add the showing photos to an album with the same name. And these folder names are indexed by the Google Photos search.
